When it comes to her kids, Mom tends to be practical. Instead of flowers, all moms dining at L. Woods on Mother's Day will receive a potted herb (rosemary, thyme or sage).
This complimentary gift can sit on a windowsill and just look pretty or be planted in the yard and be the gift that keeps on giving. You'll find these fresh herbs in many of our recipes so you know they're great for cooking.
Now, a really great kid will make mom a meal with the herb plant. The easiest is roast chicken. Chop several leaves along some garlic, mix in a few tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil and rub all over the chicken (3.5 to 4 lb.), including the cavity. Sprinkle salt and pepper liberally and roast in a preheated 425F oven for 20 minutes. Reduce to 350F and cook for another 35 to 40 minutes. Let rest and serve.
See, it really is the gift that keeps on giving!
The infamous April 15 due date for taxes has been extended a few days this year, but it's unlikely to do much for most
so L. Woods Tap & Pine Lodge is offering everyone a real break.
On Monday, April 16, all dine-in guests will receive a "tax break" in the form of a gift certificate that can be used for a future visit. If the bill is any amount up to $100, you'll receive $10. Spend between $101 to $150, the break will be $15. Should your bill be more, the "refund" will be $20 where it caps.
Now when was the last time the IRS gave you a break for stopping by for dinner? See you on the 16th!

If you're from the Midwest and of a certain age, you will most likely remember the beloved supper clubs of northern Wisconsin. These were the fine dining restaurants along the wooded dirt roads leading to many a vacation homes. They served classic American dishes along with certain foods you could always count on, such as fried fresh fish, smoked meats, the Old Fashioned cocktail and yes, all the parts that make up a relish tray.
That's the nostalgia that inspired L. Woods more than 15 years ago. And now, every Friday beginning Feburary 24, you can reminisce or experience dishes stand the test of time.
Click here to see the menu.
Our chocolate layer cake is legendary. You can taste for yourself on February 14 when every guest who comes for dinner will receive a complimentary slice to share.
Tweaked over the years until deemed flawless, the cake's moist and luxurious perfection lies in its old-fashioned simplicity and quality of ingredients. The chocolate is Valrhona, a French chocolate from Hermitage, a wine-growing district near Lyon.
Valrhona is also the key ingredient in the light and creamy icing. The dessert is typically served with fresh whipped cream and chocolate sauce, but L. Woods wants first-timers and doubters to try the cake in its simplest presentation. We're certain you'll be convinced.
In addition to the complimentary cake, guests can enjoy a change of pace with a special Valentine's Day menu for the evening. The a la carte menu will feature:
Spicy Al Pastor Chicken Flatbread
Roasted Winter Vegetable Salad (chopped lettuce, watercress, avocado, chopped bacon, roasted potatoes, roasted root vegetables, pomegranate seeds)
Shrimp de Jonghe
Prime Rib
Chocolate Cream Puff with raspberry sauce and creme anglaise
Because L. Woods is inspired by the supper clubs of Wisconsin's northwoods, the restaurant will also offer a pomegranate old fashioned cocktail for Valentine's Day along with other renditions.
Valentine's Day always fills up fast so call now for a reservation, (847) 677-3350 or online by clicking here.

L. Woods Tap & Pine Lodge hopes its youngest diners will help make the season a little brighter and merrier for less fortunate children.
Pint-size diners, tweens and kids of all other ages are being encouraged to bring in a new toy or book to the restaurant for youngsters in the Zion Township community. Each child who contributes will receive a complimentary meal from the kids menu. Grown-ups are welcome to donate, too.
Everyone who participates will be entered in a drawing for the Thank You for Giving Gift: dinner each week at L. Woods in 2012 ( a $1,300 value*). Kids for Kids Holiday Drive is underway and concludes Friday, Dec. 24. This season's holiday initiative marks its fourth year.
"It's never too early to start a conversation on the importance of helping others," says Dan McGowan, a partner at L. Woods. "This year, we chose to focus on less fortunate kids in a community that might not otherwise experience the joy of Christmas."
For the last 15 years, volunteers in Zion Township have been collecting toys for children from disadvantaged families, identified through the public school system. The Christmas Elf Program hopes to match some 500 children with gifts on Christmas.
Volunteers organize the toys and match them according to need and age of the recipients. The need, according to organizers, has never been greater.
Thank you for your donation - and happy holidays!
*Maximum value of $25 per week. Valid only on food purchases. Non transferable and cannot be combined with other discount or promotion. Kids meal for dine in only at time of donation.
Kids aren’t the only ones who should get a goodie bag at a party – grownups can appreciate them, too!

When you book a party in Lynn’s Back Room, which accommodates up to 40 people, table clothes and floral arrangements are a part of the package – not an added cost.
Everyone also receives complimentary cookies that our kitchen mixes from scratch and bakes to order.
You can also expect great attention to detail, a warm and welcoming staff and assurance that your private party guests will be impressed by the food and service.

There's no fun watching football alone or even on a friend's flat screen when you know
what's going on at L. Woods every Monday night during the season.
With all six large flat screen TVs in the bar area tuned to Monday Night Football, you
will be in slider heaven with five choices of these palm-sized burger/sandwiches. Think
hamburger, cheeseburger, pulled pork, pulled barbecue brisket and pulled barbecue
chicken brisket sliders, each for $3.50. Order by the threes and it's $9.
To go with the sliders, you can also munch on hand-cut, house-made french fries for $2
and wash it all down with $2 Pabst Blue Ribbon beer.
There's ample seating in the bar area, but you might want to arrive earlier than later. With
a menu like this, you may be competing with non sports fans.
No one can top a meal prepared by Bubbe, but this year's Rosh Hashanah menu at L.
Woods is at close as it gets.
The menu features traditional and symbolic foods – all prepared from scratch - for a
bright New Year, from the apples and honey to round loaves of challah. It will be served
after 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 27 and for lunch and dinner on Thursday, Sept. 28.
For the prix fixe of $34.95 per person ($15.95 for children), the Rosh Hashanah menu
begins with five dishes to share family style with the table: apples and honey; chopped
liver; challah, gefilte fish and matzo ball soup.
Then, guests can choose from beef brisket with natural gravy; herb roasted chicken breast
with apricot glaze or garlic-crusted whitefish as an entree. For dessert, each person can
enjoy L. Wood's famous just-baked apple strudel and cheesecake with fruit compote.
With a menu this good, it's time to give Bubbe (and yourself) a break. Reservations are
suggested and can be made by calling (847) 677-3350.
Ordering lunch or dinner from L. Woods Tap & Pine Lodge just got easier with the restaurant's new app (lication) available on the iPhone and iPad.
Once downloaded, the app allows you to order from the full menu as well as customizing your choices - from holding the onions on a dish to grilling a steak medium rare.
You can also designate the time and person for picking up the order, making it even easier to fit your schedule.
L. Woods Tap & Pine Lodge celebrates the spirit of the north woods supper club with new renditions of the infamous Old Fashioned cocktail.
These drinks of choice best known for accompanying great, simple American food of the Wisconsin supper clubs offer a mental retreat when loading up the car with the family for a five hour drive to the vacation cottage isn't feasible.
The classic Old Fashioned – considered the unofficial cocktail of Wisconsin – headlines the new cocktails at L. Woods. Made with Korbel, the brandy of choice for the Midwestern rendition, also includes sugar and muddled fruit.
Just like the supper clubs found along the quiet roads in small towns throughout northern Wisconsin, L. Woods offers a menu of great American classics, from steaks and ribs to prime rib and seafood.
For those a little less traditional, L. Woods put a twist on the classic with Gin and Citrus Old Fashioned made with Deaths Door gin, Thatcher Organic Elderflower, lime, lemon and orange bitters.
There's even an Old Fashioned for the apple enthusiast. This one stars Laird's apple brandy and apple puck schnapps.
For those who are not Old Fashioned inclined, no worries as long as you're up for supper club reminiscing. Inspired by the family-owned restaurants of Door County that popularized gathering places with satisfying portions of prime rib, steaks, seafood and wholesome quality dishes made from scratch, L. Woods carries on the tradition.
From now through summer, all bottles of wine offered at L. Woods are half-price on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
For those who prefer a white, there's Sauvignon Blanc (ideal for a hot summer day), two Chardonnays, a Pinot Grigio and Riesling. For reds that are perfect for our ribs and steaks, there are two Cabernet Sauvignons, a Pinot Noir, Malbec and Merlot.
Uncork one soon because before you know it, fall will be around the corner.
L. Woods Tap & Pine Lodge will celebrate National Apple Strudel Day on June 17 by offering its signature apple strudel for free. Baked to order, the strudel is complimentary for every two entrees ordered (limit 2 strudel per table).
For more information and reservations, call L. Woods at (847) 677-3350.
When the Boys of Summer kick off the season, you can get a taste of the ball park right here at L. Woods Tap & Pine Lodge.
Just like at the games, Vienna hot dogs will be served rightout of a steam cart on a warm bun accompanied by a pack of mustard - for only $1. They'll be on hand in the bar area only for each of the games during the season opener for the Chicago Cubs and White Sox, April 1 to 3. Schlitz beer will be available by the bottle for $2.
Because L. Woods has multiple large flat screen televisions throughout the bar area, the afternoon games for the Cubs home stand against the Pittsburgh Pirates will be shown as well as the away series for the Sox in Cleveland against the Indians. Batter up!
As a part of its annual weeklong St. Patrick's Day celebration, L. Woods Tap & Pine Lodge is hosting a beer dinner on Tuesday, March 15.
The dinner features Irish potato soup with cheddar and ale beer, braised short ribs and apple bread pudding with Baileys custard sauce. Smithwicks Irish Ale, Porterhouse Red and Porterhouse Oyster Stout will serve as the beer pairings. Price is $30 per person, exclusive of tax and gratuity. The fun begins at 7 p.m.
Reservations are limited and going fast so call (847) 677-3350 for a spot now!
L. Woods Go Bragh! (Long Live L. Woods!) begins March 10 with a menu of classic Irish specials available until the conclusion of the celebration on St. Patrick's Day, March 17. Served at lunch and dinner, the special menu includes corned beef and cabbage, Shepherd's Pie and Irish organic salmon. Bottles of Schlitz beer will be priced at $2.
Because small people rank big at L. Woods, kids will rule the roost and receive a complimentary meal* from the children's menu from March 10 through March 17.
It wouldn't be real St. Patrick's Day celebration without live music. Fitz and the Celts will perform in the bar area (also known as Frank's Tap) from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on March 11. On March 14 and 16, the Dooley Brothers will return, performing both nights from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Because beer, food and St. Patrick's Day make for a celebratory trifecta, there will be a beer dinner on March 15 beginning at 7 p.m. It will feature Irish potato soup with cheddar and ale beer, braised short ribs and apple bread pudding with Baily's custard sauce. Smithwicks Irish Ale, Porterhouse Red and Porterhouse Oyster Stout will serve as the beer pairings. Price is $30 per person, exclusive of tax and gratuity.
L. Woods Go Bragh! will close with A Passport Stamped for Ireland on Wednesday, March 17. Any diner who has a passport stamped with Ireland will receive complimentary corned beef and cabbage at lunch or dinner.
While St. Patrick's Day is a time for celebration, it is also a time for giving and L. Woods will donate $5,000 to the Illinois Make-A-Wish Foundation. This year, L. Woods decided to pass on the annual kids parade and activities so that the funds could be donated to a meaningful cause - the Make-A-Wish Foundation. But because kids are so important at L. Woods, they will receive a complimentary meal from the kids menu instead of the activities.
"We'll make the donation on behalf of Our Gang Kids Club," says Dan McGowan, the president and partner of L. Woods. "This way, all of the members - including those who do and don' attended the Saturday morning parade - can be acknowledged."
Reservations are recommended by calling L. Woods at 847-677-3350.
*Limit two kids per adult
To My Special Someone:
Valentine's Day is fast approaching and most likely, you are thinking of a gift. Maybe diamonds, perhaps rubies or a romantic getaway to an exotic destination. Yes, lovely but not exactly practical right now.
A bouquet of roses or a fancy dinner, you offer. Thoughtful, but the notion doesn't make my heart go pitter-patter.
No, for something truly meaningful and impressive, go for chocolate cake. Not just any chocolate cake, mind you. I want the chocolate layer cake from L. Woods Tap & Pine Lodge.
Right about now, you're shaking your head, bewildered. L. Woods? Dessert over diamonds? Cake instead of Cabos?
This is no ordinary dessert. The chocolate, four-layer cake at L. Woods is the most fabulous rendition I've ever tasted. I've made countless recipes at home and eaten an infinity of chocolate cakes at restaurants only to be less than wowed. I'm talking pretty amazing restaurants, too. You also know of my prowess in the kitchen. But try as I might, these prior encounters have lacked depth, were too dense or just plain dry.
The L. Woods chocolate cake is simply divine. It's supremely moist, buttery, and soft but doesn't melt into mush in your mouth. You taste pure, rich chocolate. The frosting is truly the icing on the cake. It has the ultimate mouth feel, velvety and luxurious with the slightest tang. Just dreamy.
Maybe what I love most - of course after the plate is swabbed clean with my finger and wanting more – is the simplicity. It's just chocolate frosted, chocolate layer cake. Nothing fancy. Pure in flavor, pure in delivery. It doesn't try to be anymore than it is. Its simplicity belies its wonderfulness.
The restaurant, by the way, fine-tuned the recipe, which originated from a famous diner in Minneapolis. The L. Woods chefs tinkered and tweaked it to perfection. A lot of work to my benefit. Thank you, L. Woods.
You can make it – a recipe follows. But then I would eat the entire cake - if not in one sitting, definitely at breakfast the next day. Best to just present a slice on February 14. Gift wrap not necessary.
My heart is already swelling with love and gratitude. Oh, what's that? Drool? Just my mouth watering in anticipation.
Eternity and Beyond,
Your Beloved
